Above The Fray

It’s interesting to see how some people who don’t participate in the debate, whether because they can’t find a position to defend, or because they aren’t interested or informed, find a way to raise their voices to criticize those who do.

A good example is Morgan Spurlock, author of “Supersize Me” and first person to speak out on Catie Couric’s “Free Speech” segment on CBS News. In it, he claimed that “those of us in the middle” are being ignored by the media who cover those on the extremes, and went on to complain about the lack of civil discourse. Throughout his 90 seconds, he railed against the “polarizers” while presenting himself as a representative of the majority who are unrepresented.

Mr. Spurlock seems to believe that not holding a position he is willing to defend should somehow make his non-opinion interesting. He also seems to believe that not having a position is somehow virtuous, and places him and his cohorts in the squishy middle above the fray. And as far a being civil, I don’t find it a contribution to civil discourse to refer to positions you don’t hold as “extreme”. Finally, by not giving a single example, he reduced his tirade to simply that: a tirade. And a tirade is neither civil nor a discourse.
